Start reading Seth Godin's blog, that should point you in a good direction.

I measure just how "cold" the call is by the clammy palms and high heart rate factor

I've watched grown men wither as they call their bestest buds to come to a presentation on his new business and to meet some of his new business associates

After that, calling total strangers is a walk in the park

I'll send one of the "Stormers" boys your way......

And you are correct in that the less practiced you are at identifying and asking for appropriate referrals the colder your prospects will be. Hence it's important to know who your ideal target market is that you want to work with and to ensure that your sources know that too.

The best was to get referrals is to give them first.....then wait for the floodgates to open...as each referral you give should make 2 people very happy with you!

Isn't prospecting a form of cold calling? It certainly used to feel like it in the days when I used to do such things. But then I used to have such a lousy technique

Any form of passive marketing saves having to make that introductory call, which is all a cold call is really.

If you are trying to avoid having to call the suspect possible client whom you've never met before, then you need to get them to call you.

Now how can you get them to know about you so that they might call you when they've got a need you can satisfy?

Then out of all the available options, what method(s) might be the most cost effective when measured against the return?
