using GIMPPortable as alternative to PhotoShop

I recently downloaded GIMPPortable from http://www.portableapps.com and I have to say that it's quite amazing.

GIMP has always been a good free alternative to PhotoShop, but since it's main target was the Linux community, it didn't take off that well among PS users. It can pretty much do everything that PS can do and has some cool extra features.

What's nice about the portable one is that I have it on my USD HDD which I take with me when I go on a photoshoot and if I need to use someone else's PC, I'll still be able to edit my photos

Not at all. Portable Apps is a PC suite of applications that can be run from a flash drive on almost any PC platform, leaving no trace of being used.

Gimp is a image editing software. As I understand it was the linux version of Photoshop for windows. For that reason it isn't very commonly know. Since then however it has been built into a windows compatible distributions.

No, it runs one Windows & Linux, and I think MAC too for that matter. But there used to be a time that only Linux users used sine, since it's GNU (GIMP stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program) and Windows users in general are afraid of using non-commercial software. BUT, they're getting used to the idea of free software

Someone on another forum asked if he can open RAM files with GIMPPortable. Since I don't shoot in RAW myself, I never tried it. But, it's never too late to learn anything new, so I'll see what I can do to open RAW files with GIMPPortable.

I downloaded it and it is a nifty little program and its portability is a big plus. The program is simple yet powerful. Its tools are self explanatory and I find the program easy to navigate. But the best part of the program is the fact that it is free. Now if only someone would be brave enough to make a 3D render program that is able to convert 2D blueprint to 3D object… that would be nice…

downloaded it today (paint just wasn't doing it for me this morning -_-) and I can tell you right now, they haven't gone the traditional linux way. well, I suppose because they can't with windows, but that's besides the point. if sites offered a linkin to the linux application installer (app-get and all that) in an easier fashion, and maybe less focus on security, they'd get into the market a bit better. anywho, waffling. did some quick adjustments to make a watermark for a PDF report and it performs =P photoshop killer, right here.

well, with the way windows and it's libaries, registry, DDL's, etc works, one can't really follow the Linux route of doing things. But, GTK2+ has done a great job of making it easier to port Linux stuff over
