TIME OF USE TARIFF ( TOU)

Thought I would start a thread with TOU and the in's and outs with regards to solar

The basic principle is the same in all utility groups but the times and tariffs will differ.
The times in SA will basically be the same as Eskom is setting the peak and off peak times.

The time periods are predetermined and will determine what rate/KWH you will pay at different times of the day
There will also be winter and summer rate changes and time slot changes

I have pasted a Time period table below which will help explain the times

If we take the Tariff for winter as it is normally extreme
Peak will be R 6.48 / KWH
Normal will be R 2.37 / KWH
Off Peak will be R 1.56/ KWH

If you look at the time periods in the post above you will see Peak in Winter during the week is 6H00 till 9H00 and 17H00 till 19H00
This is the time that Eskom struggles the most with high demand on Electricity
If you take a geyser/ Dishwasher , you will be mad to use that appliance during the peak hours as you will be paying R 6.48 /Kwh - To heat your geyser for 2 people showering needs +/- 3kwh of electricity .To heat during peak will cost you R 19,44

By putting a timer on and shifting the heating time to normal time will cost you R 7.11 and if you have solar on the roof you would move it towards 11H00 and heat it for free
In the evening after showering it will be better to shift heating time to off Peak at a cost of R 1.56/Kwh = R 4.68

When you have TOU meters fitted it is all above moving some of the loads that are immaterial to the time of day that you need to use the appliance , like a dishwasher at 4,5Kw for +/- 1 hour at night after 22H00 is going to cost a lot less then to clean the dishes during Peak

A swimming pool you would move to day time while the sun is shinning - I turn the pool off on a cloudy day and let the geysers heat up , wash machine run etc - Purely comes down to management

In PE when we apply for net metering on solar installs we have the choice to pay an extra +/-R100 per month and are allowed to feed back.
For this they credit us at a predetermined rate / Kwh depending on the time slot .
At the end of the month they tally it up and if you are in credit, they zero the units and you just pay the availability - If you use more than you feed back then you pay for the units at the rate in the time slot you used them.

Our feedback tariffs in winter are
Peak - R4.22/kwh
Normal - R1.54/kwh
Off Peak - R 1.00/kwh

To work the system you make sure that you use bare minimum during peak and allow all solar to feed peak at peak time in the morning

We dont have TOU for domestic applications in our part of the country, yet, nor do we have TN-C-S earthing systems.

Correction I have just checked the new tarrif structure, if you are a high consumer, then you can apply for TOU tariff. IF you register your solar installation you will be put on a net billing tariff.

This tariff is designed for residential customers with consumption above 1000kWh.
