Dodgy Doctor - Pinetown
Can anyone enlighten me as to the eventual outcome of this "Doctor" Dr SB Memela, and the criminal procedures that were taken against him?
Further please note that I have received a medical certificate that states that he is a General Practitioner. When querying this, we were informed by the doctor that he had made a mistake and filled in the wrong medical certificate pad and that it should have been written on the Traditional Doctor pad instead. My question is, what is he doing with a General Practitioner note pad with his name and particulars printed on it in the first place as he claims to be a Traditional Healer.
I also find it strange that the company registration number on the General Practitioner Medical Certificate is the same as the one on the Certificate which Dr Memela received from Abelaphi Bendabuko Institute of Traditional Practices.Comment

Hi Britt,
The best is to get hold of the HPCSA and ask for their fraud dept and get them to follow up on him. They did get an arrest warrant for him previously.
You don't have to accept sick notes if they are not genuine. My advice would be to check the doctors name and practice number with the HPCSA. If it is not legit don't give the staff member the sick leave. The staff member can then take unpaid or annual leave.Comment

Thanks Royf.
What came of your hearings if you don't mind me asking? Were you able to dismiss staff for this offence. Our staff member has come up with the same excuses that he is a traditional healer, he can't remember where he visited him or what medicine he gave him and he doesn't remember who recommended he see Dr Memela. We know he is lying to us but we need to get some concrete proof. This is not his first offence in our business and he has had a final warning for misconduct about 5 months ago so it is time we let him go.
