    Outdoor lights

    Installing lights outdoors,

From my experience it was never a good idea to install an old 60 or 100 watt bulb, why because they would explode if they got wet.

Then you have to ask did they light up old Christmas decoration outside, back in the days when the lamps where dipped in highly flammable paint to create various colours as required, they didn't explode.

I installed a bunch of "string lights" a couple months ago and they have open E27 lamp holders with LED 5 watt bulbs.

What do you think about installing open lamp holders outside in the rain?

Open lamp holders have been, like you say, used for as long as one remembers. I guess if the lamps are out of reach and protected by ELU it should be ok?

As an aside, I dug up someones lawn this week removing non ip rated lamps and connections that were causing a tripping problem. It looked like the place had been mortar bombed!

Remember the old spike PAR 38 garden lights were a rather interesting challenge, to think nobody use to connected them to the ELU back in the day, because they were a tripping hazard. The rubber seal would disintegrate causing all sorts of problems.
