What would allay such manouvres would be rather simple yet robust policing and clamping down on the violent, criminal and illegal stakeholders in this disaster. Reactive policing cannot work in such circumstances. The Police should be seen to be proactively maintaining peace and order and let the politicians yak their way out of it.
I am all for a strong approach that will clearly demonstrate the capacity to deal with infractions. We know what to do please let someone just do!
It's at times like these that journalists really have to pay attention to responsible journalism. Sensationalism is just going to add fuel to the fire.
I don't know if Jacob Zuma just happens to have a lot of free time on his hands at the moment, but there have been a few crunches of late where he has been pretty quick in making all the right noises and moves. The Zim issue and now these "riots"/civil unrest incidents come to mind. (Just an idle sidenote).

I've certainly noticed that. What I have found the most interesting is that the media has been portraying Zuma in a much more positive light (now that he is making the right noises). The media seems to like the Zuma vs Mbeki playoff. After all, the media is conflict driven.
The thing is, Zuma doesn't have to take any responsibility for the things he says. He doesn't really have any direct control over things, so he can say what he wants with no repercussions.
Now Germany is advising its Citizens to avoid JHB.

I have finally seen a copy of this 'PETITION' and here is my take.
It appears to be nothing more than an angry Zimboy ( I am one by birth so I reserve the right to say it!) venting. Rightly or wrongly.
The language is not very convincing. The presentation of issues lacks clarity. It is badly written. And I have a very funny feeling those who can actually read will not take too much notice of it.
