Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)
Can somebody please explain to me what this software is, why it's needed and is it safe to download and then run?

.Net is basically a software environment that programs execute (run) in and it makes them play nicely with each other. Redistributable just refers to the fact it's bundled in an installer package that can be included on a disk that other software is distributed on. X86 means it's the version for older 32-bit Windoze operating systems. If you get it included on a disk or you download it from the microsloth website it should be safe to install.

Most newer operating systems such as server2008 or>, vista and win7 have it included in the installation. You only need to install it separately if you're using XP or server 2003 or earlier.
