Is it possible to trace the IP address where an email was generated when it comes from a gmail address?

Try IP Lookup - there are lots of others too. When it comes to geolocation some are better than others.

EDIT: Aah yes, took a bit of scratching around to find it, but here's one I've been quite impressed with by Geobytes - it gives pretty detailed results.

Hi there I tried Geobytes with both of my gmail accounts and it points to Mountainview CA. So I suspect getting the location of a mail from a Gmail account is not going to be easy no matter which software you use.

You made me check. Gmail does not incude the IP of the user in the header info. So you're right - you can't trace the location of the sender because their IP address isn't disclosed.
