    Telkom/Thunderbird/Avast

Hi all - Telkom did some upgrading on their e-mail environment over the weekend.

This morning I received error messaged when I tried to download emails via Thunderbird.

I tried changing setting after setting and eventually found that it was AVAST antivirus that was causing the problem. I de-activated the mail shield for scanning inbound mail, and the problem disappeared.

I thought that this might be helpful for someone else who might be struggling with the same issue.

Strange, I haven't had this issue - must be something Telkom did as I'm not working through them - though I use TB and Avast. Perhaps they're using a port number which Avast doesn't like, or their domain's been added to Avast's blacklist. Or are they using encrypted POP/IMAP access - if so no client-side AV can actually check those emails before passing them on to the email client.

Was working without problems before the Telkom "upgrade", so not sure what they have changed. Port number is the same, they are not using encrypted access ... well not that I can tell ...

Anyway - was just hoping to save someone else the frustration in case it happened to them.
