    MS WORD

When trying to open a .DOCX file in Word 2013 I receive the following error message:
“there was an error opening the file.”
What can be causing this to happen?

If it is truly a .docx file, it should open, or there is a problem with your software. Is your software legit? If not, try downloading LibreOffice (google it - free open source office software) and try opening the file with that.

If your software is legit, the file may be corrupted or someone has manually changed the extension (it may have been a .jpg or .xls or such) and so Word is trying to open the file in a format it's not designed to be opened in. Either way, you won't be able to open the file.

Hi. If you have an older version of Office you can download a free program that will open the newer docx or xlsx etc. called fileformatconverter.
Once you have installed the program it will automatically open the newer format in your version. You cannot, however, save to the newer format, it will save as .doc or .xls etc

Below is a link you can use to get the download which is not big.

Libre Office (which I mentioned earlier) is an offshoot of Open Office. I've used both but my preference lies with Libre Office.

I have been using Libre Office for three years now. So far so good.
