Given the relatively small capital outlay on smaller laser printers, I don't know that it's worth getting too brand focused. They're almost disposable items anyway. And it's hard to recommend a specific model because they keep on changing.
Probably the most important question to ask is toner cost per copy. Even at 1000 pages per month, 75c per copy vs 30c per copy is a big difference.
Toner is the new opium, and I have noticed a trend towards smaller toner cartridges (you get fewer copies per cartridge) that cost about the same as the larger ones. What I would look for is a printer that gives the most copies per toner cartridge.
If you're talking to a good sales rep, they should steer you in the right direction.
Thanks everyone.
We had a HP laserjet 4P (about 12 years old) that finally packed up! Got about 5000 copies to the toner at R500 per cartridge - I think it fell out of the window once and I know the cat slept on it for many years and it just kept ON and ON and ON. Finally gave its last gasp some time in December, so it was with fond memories and reluctance that I have finally buried it.

10c a copy! Good luck finding a cheap machine that will deliver that nowadays.
I'm waiting for my Samsung SCX-4521F to be delivered, its not very cheap but the cost per page is also 10c.
R 299 for generic toner, 3000 pages with a 5% yield.

You know what frustrates me with these desktop printers nowadays - the continual release of new models (with discontinuation of "old" models), and the cost and availability of what are arguably wearing parts.
I've got what has been a particularly reliable colour laser printer that has been relatively cheap to run - at least for colour laser. It needs a new fuser unit. The thing is obviously designed to be easily replaced, but the part is not available because the machine is "redundant." Just four years old for crying out loud.
Don't count on it. Most of the manufacturers use the same companies to provide end-user support.
Having said that, my view is to stay away from HP. Based on the overpriced nature of both the product and the cartridges, it is not a cost effective machine to run.
I would venture to say that Samsung, Lexmark and Brother are the better options in today's market based on purchase price, cost per copy and reliability.
