The argument that Google was trying to keep its competition (Yahoo!) afloat through troubled times is an interesting one.

The cynical side of me remembers that Microsoft was bidding to take over Yahoo! at one point. It's good to see anti-trust legislation doing its job. If that involves gamesmanship between the corporates, so be it. These boys are big enough to look after themselves.

That said, it'll be interesting to see how history judges the decision if Yahoo! does collapse one day and nothing takes its place.

Probably of greater concern is how this might affect Google support for all sorts of open source development projects out there.

I serouisly doubt if Google will even go down, or can be taken down. Their involvement in Open Source is too big, and it's not going to go away (soon?)

Concur! I think even if google closed there office doors today it would take 5 years just to wind down what they are - and lets face it they aint closing doors soon

The threat is to break the company up into seperate parts, not close it down

What strikes me is ordinarily you're innocent until proven guilty. But when it comes to anti-trust, you seem to be judged on your potential to do evil, rather than that you have done evil.

May years ago IBM also went through the same scenario and came through unscathed but since then a lot of water ran into the sea and the playing field could be a little different !

Unscathed by anti-trust maybe, but they got properly ninja'd by clones and arguably... Microsoft.

And Microsoft takes the news retrenching 5000 workers last night! Thats a pretty big deal for Microsoft but i would suspect no real indication of its future
