They do need to recover their capital investment, and it is substantial. Perhaps there is a critical number of players that have to be in the game before real competitive pricing becomes a reality.
The Undersea Cable, how will it affect all of us?

if that really was the case , then Telkom recovered ALL their capital investment and much more LOOOOONg ago. actually it was (maybe still is) one of the MOST PROFITABLE companies in SA!
-in my humble opinion 2 competitors is enough but if there is collusion , price fixing & corruption then even 100 competitors would not make much difference.A “conspiracy theory” no longer means an event explained by a conspiracy. Instead, it now means any explanation, or even a fact, that is out of step with the government’s explanation and that of its media pimps.Comment

The cables and the webs they support can be used for both good and evil.Agreed? In order to enslave rich and poor, free and bond with a mark does involve the usage of these types of facilities and technologies(not books). If we blindly wish to focus on the benefits of "educational greatness"(in line with Superscenics' esoteric cliche), then that suites "Telkom" and those who are buzy planning your destruction just fine
, as you will be advocating this in the name of education, while they sharpen their teeth for all free and bond
!
We cannot stop it, so we try make the best of it. To identify it's main purpose, or at least that of it's owners, would be wise, or are we not sufficiently educated still?Comment

Neotel
So in a forgotten post i mentioned Neotel and an option it could be....
Heres my recent experiences. Today Sunday, i did a speed test as really slow upload at 23kbps and down at 53kbps. Bearing in mind when i got Neotel, we were in a very "hot" area in terms of signal, actually full strengh... Still get 3 bars of 5.
Also had a really huge run in with accounts - cant do a eft from Absa!!!!!! They want me do manual deposits!
I guess the moral of this story is if you have Neotel, write it out, post it snail mail, it'll get there faster.....Garth

I think we're missing the point. This is all about money, and the more money the telecoms can get out of the "ignorant" South African citizen, the better.
There absolutely no reason, at all why we should be paying per MB / GB for anything, especially locally.
We have some local server with IS, and pay for traffic between 2 server which are located in 2 different datecentres, on the SAME NETWORK. Why????? There's absolutely no reason why, yet they do it. And we don't even pay less for that traffic than for international traffic either.
This leaves a lot of room for questioning. I mean, I can understand if they charge you an X amount for say 512Kb (like the Diginet model), and amount Y for 1Mbps, but we still have to pay for the amount of data downloaded on those lines as well.
And, why hasen't Europe / USA / Australia, etc's telecomms not gone bankrupt when they don't charge per MB on download? Even though about it? They charge for the speed of the line, and that's it. The speed of the line is a CAP in itself. Theoretically, one can download 5GB max on a 64K line.
My argument is, that this is an easy way to make money, lots of money, and no one can do anything about it.
P.S. garthu, why can't you EFT from ABSA to Neotel? Who do they bank with?Get superfast South African Hosting at WebHostingZoneComment

They with NEdabnk and have a linked or predefined account at ABSA so you select the predefined account and enter details. The problem comes with entering account number, it comes back with doesnt exist. There must be a system that ABSA uses to determine the account is correct or exists which the info must come from NEotel. Neotel blames ABSA, cant give me a solution!! Crazy...Garth

Just out of curiosity (maybe their accountant isn't clued up?), maybe the account number they gave you is shorter than what ABSA accepts, and you may need to add 2 or even 4 zero's to the beginning of the account number?Get superfast South African Hosting at WebHostingZoneComment

Thanks but believe me have gone through the motions. They admit there is a problem (not just me). As is say they blame ABSA... but thanks for the thought!Garth
