    Error when opening c:

    Can anybody help ?

One of the computers running on my LAN has the following problem:

When opening Explorer and double clicking on c: I get the error message "Copy.exe cannot be found."
I can however open c: by using right click and going to Explore.
    O/S is XP Home.
Assistance would be greatly appreciated !

    Security
i've been doing some self cleanup of my comp. i downloaded an antivirus scan. from there i deleted alot of files that were said to be infected. now when i start my comp, this thing saying that copy.exe cannot be found or something. now when i go to my computer to open up my C and D drive, i says that it can't find copy.exe. what is wrong? did i delete something i shouldn't have?
    A. copy.exe is a worm that actually copys itself to the autorun inf. files. go here this will help you solve the problem it is to involved to put in this answer. and yes you did delete something you needed. [Link] scroll down to the bottom for solutions.

      Good FREE Anitiviruses (download links):
      Avast 4.8 Home ***** (29MB) (My choice)
      AVG 8 FREE** (59MB)

      Best Paid:
      Panda Security ****
      Avast
      AVG

      Avoid:
      Norten Anti virus
      PC Tools

Ok, I resolved the problem by downloading a program called "PRT" from the following website: http://www.sergiwa.com/ and installed this.

This problem is apparently remnants of a virus picked up by the A/V program and deleted but the virus by that time had already caused the damage and usually transmitted via USB storage devices.

        Works like a dream !

Whoaaaaaa ! Sorry wrong info..............this is for the problem where one cannot open C: via the normal "OPEN" facility which has been replaced by an "Autoplay" option.

I shall look up the remedy for first problem and post that again.

Wow I thought I was loosing it. The fix sounded right, but then I must have been in the wrong forum. But this is the right forum. Wow confused. Thanks for the update, I would have been confused for a while.

That would be overkill, I'm sure.

You can pick up a virus from USB storage devices? Goodness! I usually put images I wish to be printed by a photoshop onto a "store 'n go" stick and hand it to the shop. What precautions should I be taking?

                      Graeme,
We have nod32 which seems to delete all the viruses on the memory sticks guys bring in. Most people don't believe me when I say their memory sticks had viruses. So I find nod 32 worth the money.

any active-scanning anti virus software should handle that. AVG will also pick up viruses as they attempt to begin transfer.

if anyone doesn't have an active-scanning anti virus, you can usually do a manual scan (right click device, Scan with 'specific antivirus name').
if you do find something and it deletes, it's generally then good practice to do a complete PC scan to ensure none of the nasty blighters got through.

I used to use AVG FREE Edition, but have found the updates to fiddle with the windows service packs. I now use Avast 4.8 Home. Its a great all rounder free anti-virus. *It updates automatically, and found a virus i had on my flash drive that PC Tools (Microsoft recommended) didn't pick up.

On the note "hand it to the shop" they should be running anti-virus already, unless they are ignorant to the dangers. Just like IanF you've GOT to have an antivirus if you handle lots of drives, who know what they might be carrying .
