    3 G/GPRS Rates in Mozambique

I am going to Barra in Mozambique in 3 weeks time and need to do some account payments from there. This is close to Inhambane.
Does anybody know if there is Vodacom data coverage in that area and any idea on per meg cost? According to a guy I spoke to the cost is enormous like R100 to R 200 per meg
I believe there is normal voice coverage but pointless in going through all the schlep if there is no data coverage. Vodacom cannot help.
    Please help !

Sorry cannot say what you will be paying or even if Vodacom can give you the info but I do know that the roaming function will get you voice GPRS is another story on its own. Go to the links given above and phone them on 84111 and ask because if they are dealing with roaming then they must be able to provide you with the info you need. But again it is Vodacom and being professional is not there strongpoint.

Come to think of it I never even saw the ocean in real life before. Is deep sea fishing fun? Also if it is R100 for 2MB then I recommend a voice dialup or something in that nature.

            Hi Garth,

10 Out of 10 for trying ! I think it is going to be cheaper on the pocket and far less frustrating just leaving ( read "forget" ) the laptop at home.

And Insulin, yes this deep sea fishing thing is actually just a fish feeding exercise. ( and not using regular bait ) The best thing here is to buy your fish at the local P & P fish counter with far less stressful consequences.

Thanks man ! I need a bit of a rest.

Ok, let me tell you what I have come across.

I managed to get a Vodacom Moz simcard from a friend and he says that with this prepaid simcard one can access the net and make phone calls at Moz. rates which is FAR cheaper than using roaming.
This is obviously provided there is data coverage and I have been told there is but not as fast as local.
                    So, wish me luck !

Ok, back from Moz. and it was a lovely break !
I really do not know why way back when the boere were semi in charge they did not "take over" this part of the world as well. Lovely part of the world BUT you need to be able to stand your ground against Mozzies. Must be zilloins there and they do bite !
Back to the 3G situation.................. the simcard I bought was data enabled and even allowed you access via the phone, but not via the 3 G modem. You have to ask the local service provider in Maputo to enable the data to be used on the modem. You cannot do this while out in the sticks. So anyone wanting to use your modem, you have to get this activated in Maputo.
What I did was to go to Barra Lodge and use their Wi Fi hotspot. Not cheap but at least you can get connectivity.

you should rather have used a Mcel sim. The coverage is better by far.
Before i left they were starting with 3g and for a couple of months it was free.
It was fun while it lasted.
