    Microsoft Desperation!

In short I am done with Microsoft.

They just can’t give you proper program support. I had a registry worm and it all but destroyed my system. I am totally done with it now. All Microsoft products are so crappy and you always have to pay $80 for this and $120 for that.

I have spent over R9000 on Microsoft products “R6000 "In the day" on Vista Ultimate and R3000 on Office 2007” and it is getting to the point where Microsoft wants millionaires not users using their programs.

So I am hoping that UNIX or Linux can save me from Microsoft.

Yes you cannot play games on Linux but F*ck it! I don’t need game support all I need is something that can still run my Office 2007. That is the only compatibility I want in a Linux system right now.

Also if it can run “Word-Web” it will be a wonderful help. I am not interested in free fix tools that is sponsored by Pornography and I am done Goolge-ing for ways to fix a registry that is basically impossible to fix without some BS program that some wank*r programmed came up with for Microsoft.

Any suggestions and where I can get a Free DVD for a proper Linux OS also if you can give me the website I will make a plan for downloading it.

I was a Microsoft Monk but in the end it was just another dead
    religion!

Why not switch to a Mac then. Plenty of Linux stuff out there, but you may need to move over to star office.

Thing is these Virus coders must understand that they are helping Microsoft to make even more money out of them. It is my opinion that the Virus coding gets turned into profit that takes the form of fix-ware software that only cost you $40 US. I am thinking that viruses are being contracted because there is just no end to them and it is a profitable market that keeps the internet for ransom.

This being said I have personally decommissioned internet capability for about 5 offices consisting of about 80 to a 100 computers in total. That is 100 users that will no longer use the internet at all. “Sold a few fax-systems about 25 of them ” Also the policies is getting stricter by the day...

See Virus programmers think that most companies cannot function without the internet but they are dead wrong about this assumption! They can! I have seen 5 companies functioning better without the net at this point in time.

The scary thing is, is fax the end of e-mail?

the internet is only truly necessary when you need to check emails, take a look at your product site, take a look at competitor sites, and if you solve problems using it.
fax being the end of email is kinda backward mate. it's a lot easier to send reports n shiet through a lone PDF to an email account than faxing the pages through. That said, it's easier getting those pesky pron and v14gr4 ads coming through email hahaha =P
in the end it's just whichever is easier.

6k for vista ultimate. nope, dunno how you did it. not even incredible corruption steps that high.

I'll suggest kubuntu. intuitive, easy to understand version, with app-get being your best friend ^^

with that you should download WINE to get .EXEs running. haven't tested that too extensively. just be careful, I think I used up about a gig and a half in updating it with the app-get reccomended stuffs.

virus writing is a very lucrative business it seems. I can bet it's very similar to medicine. originally people would fix the issues, and feel good about themselves. what was the last major disease cured, fully? polio in 1950. our technology moves forward, but the greed stays.

Like that. Dont even have mine plugged in more. Most people use 086 now which is expensive to fax to. In the last year only had to send one fax i think...

              Hi
You can get Office 2007 for a Mac, that way you get to use the product that you want and run on a different operating system.

The last time I tried Open Office, there were little formatting discrepancies when opening a Word document that were pretty irritating. That was about two years ago, so it might have improved since.

There's no way that you're going to get Mac free ... you may even end up spending more than you're used to with M$ (new hardware as well). Several Linuxes available for free download, but it would probably be much cheaper to just buy a CD. Here's 3 sites offering various linuxes available ranging from R20 to about R600, they also offer other software if you don't want to download (say) OpenOffice of 200+ MB.

Open Office 3 does pretty well with .DOC & .XLS files. Open and save. As Dave's stated, some formatting discrepancies, but only with very advanced formatting (especially to do with graphics). However, it's basically S#IT with DOCX and XLSX files. Opens & Saves them sure! But formatting is totally bugg3r3d ... even worse than the addon to MS Office 2003. Only decent way of getting to load those is to SaveAs from MSO2007 to DOC / XLS.

As for running MSO2007 on Linux, I don't think you can yet. WINE is still trying to run some older stuff, but MSO2007 isn't working yet. If you don't mind having 2 OS's (Linux + Windows) you can install something like VirtualBox on Linux, then install Windows inside it (not yet available for Vista64bit, but 32bit works , see attached Vista running as window inside Linux). Ensure you have a huge amount of RAM & allow for at least 1GB for Vista (512MB absolute min). This way you've got windows running only the apps you want (could disallow Internet to the windows), copy-n-paste works between the 2 OS's & you have a shared portion of HD between the 2 as well (seen as if it's a network share).

Biggest problem is emails, IMHO there's nothing that truly compares with Outlook ... although Thunderbird comes close, ensure you also install the Lightning addon for calendars.

For me at present, there's no chance. Mac / Linux still can't handle AutoCAD, Revit & 3dStudio . They've got older versions of ACad running in WINE, but I've become so used to the new features - it would be detrimental to go backwards (the shown example is a version of ACad from 1997 - release 14 there's been 10 releases since then). Some have got it running on Mac, but then performance goes down the tubes . I'm still running Windows for this reason only. Have moved away from MSO as much as possible, found OOo in some ways a lot better. Only reason for me to stick with MSO is Outlook & Access, but as stated some alternatives are available which aren't that bad .

Ubuntu is the way to go

Both Microsoft and Apple fear open source software, because it allows you the freedom of choice. Ubuntu is a South African open source product that is backed by Mark Shuttleworth.

Ubuntu has gained a great deal of respect world wide in the short time that it has been available.

I tried OO for a while with no problem opening old docs and MSO stuff and in reverse.

Changed back as some of the things I use did not work properly in the OO systems. Cant remember what they were now, but remember that the point was made that being open source, continual developments are being made and that the resources were not in place to ensure everything is the same as MS. For basics and some smart stuff at a zero price - it really is the way to go.

My Vista has a few more licences then the one you get at the local PC store. Anyway the fax systems work with fax-to-Email. And there e-mail systems can only accept PDF with a 3MB limit on it. The rule on the mail server is PDF only right now. But no more web use at all. No more USB drives also. Fact is that one company enforced a new policy “If you use a USB drive you will be disciplined and even fired”

The Virus thing is p!ssing companies off and they are taking steps. I can’t help but wonder how many people lost their jobs or companies because of viruses...
