Do your electric fence maintenance now!!!

The funny thing with electric fence's is that everyone expects it keep going for... 4 years down the line, no service, no checks.. but its expected to protect possibly your life! Now that rains are here, home maintenance is a must!

Do yourself a favour and go around a clear all vegetation as far back as you can as this really saps the energy once the rains come - even to the point it renders it useless.

Minor arcing when its raining, not to serious or to worry about. Large arcing, loud and big visible spark you might want to attend to.

Check that the earth spikes are still connected - the mower, dogs, kids, rust etc often damage the ground spike cables and with no ground spikes, you basically have a half effective electric fence!

If you can, when theres lightning, unplug it for a while - same as you would do for your TV (which by the way doesn't do to much for your life but still gets looked after more!). Battery should keep you going a few hours. (dependent on types)

Look after it...it will look after you!

Fantastic advice. As a qualified electric fence installer I found what you said to be so true. When I had my electric fence company I ran a Maintainence contract division. Believe it I charged R50 rand a month and very much like a garden service works. They even received a slip each time a service was carried out.

It worked like a charm and I really made money. It is not that people do not want to keep their fences in order it is just they do not have the time.

I do not run my business anymore as I lost my husband and did not want to carry on with it. Would be nice to know how you are doing.

How about a device fitted to an electric fence to draw attention it must humm, crackle, pop and spit out blue sparks every so often.
That will keep the dastards away!!

        humm, crackle, pop and spit
LOL, yup that would kinda do the trick for sure...

LOL...you really want to get them hey!!

No not at all. Very illegal number one, second your earth leakage would need to be bypassed.

I have seen one where exactly all this was done.... but when someone gets dead you really don't want that amount of trouble in your life.

As far as I am aware there is such an apparatus and I think it comes in the form of a light that flashes and connected to the HT wires.
Do a Google and see what you can come up with.

Lol, from an electrical point of view if it was a plug in device then it will cause earth leakage tripping. If it's run on its own circuit and is hard wired into a 2-pole isolator then it could be supplied without earth leakage.

There are a few other pesky rules in SANS1042 and SAPS101 which would make it non-compliant.

Those are available in all sorts, however don't recommend them for security - problem is they also then tell the guys when fence is off! Great for game..

Probably about the same time as they stopped the electric chair.... it's really really bad for you!
