    Vodacom having troubles?

I'm not sure what's going on. This morning my cellphone's got no connection whatsoever. But it's intermittent! After several turn-off/on cycles I get various results:
    1. Only phone - no data
    2. Edge data, but no phone
    3. HSDPA data, no phone
    4. GPRS with phone

So I turned of the "automatic" network connection, selected the "Search networks" option in the settings menu, selected Vodacom ... and after 1 hour it's still showing a message of:
Your network mode will be changed to manual. Registering on Vodacom-SA...
The connection icons show GPRS and Phone at full strength.

Wait a minute! As I'm typing the data icon just changed to EDGE! Are they changing something in the Sandton area at present?

Scratch that! It just changed to HSDPA mode, but the phone strength icon change to a red PLUS, with a message of "Emergency calls only".

The data does work as I can download emails, juts tested! But no phone connection! Went onto the vodacom site and logged in, it shows I've got credit in the account and still some 150MB of data left ... so that's not it!

If you try your sim card in a different phone and it's still the same then it has to be a network issue.

I have to be honest, in Cape Town I can only remember Vodacom network issues once in the last 3 or 4 years, there was no service for a full afternoon so I'm hoping for your sake their tech staff are jacked up and on the ball.

I've just had a friend complain of it as well!

BTW, I found a "work-around" to the situation: My phone (a Motorola Milestone with Andriod 2.2) has an option to connect using 2G instead of 3G/HSDPA (apparently for battery saving). But if I switch the option on, it seems to have phone connection with either GPRS/EDGE. At least it's usable, not fast on data though! Perhaps their 3G connection's down? Since every time I turn of this limit I get HSDPA connection but no phone!

I had this problem yesterday in the south of Johannesburg with my iPhone, maybe it is a rolling problem. Today it seems fine.

I got an SMS apology from Vodacom at 9 last night about the network outage. They did say it was restored,

Yep it seems to be functioning again today. Must've been some hiccup.
