End of ECB registering electrical contractors

The Chief Inspector at Department of Labour has informed the Electrical Contractors Board that effective 1st September 2012 electrical contractors must register at the provincial offices of the DoL.

Having recently renewed our company's registration, our registration via the ECB only expires at the end of July 2013. Hopefully the regional offices will have ironed out any teething troubles in their registration process by then.

I have just renewed my membership with the ecb online, had expired in december last year, naughty boy. Nobody is checking. The only reason i registered was because one of my customers need COCs for heat pump installations. They need a COC to claim back from Eskom.

Dave,I also did a check on your comapny just to make sure you were registered, it indicates both your renewal and still has your old number displayed.

I am still trying to understand why we have an ECB, it serves no purpose other than to waste money employing people.

Yeah, it's like there's two registrations on record for us at the casual glance. Pretty obvious that the one takes over where the other left off though. I suspect it's because we were one of the first companies to register when they introduced online registration and there was a change in the registration numbering system along the way. All legal and above board though.

Doesn't bother me at all. If we're doing anything wrong I want to know about it.

I wonder if DoL will have an online search facility for the public to check up on their contractor's registration?

Wouldn't you like to have a way to check that your electrical contractor is actually qualified?

Yes, I know some cynics suggest it's no guarantee that they'll do a good job, but at the very least you know they've got provable, relevant training beyond being shown by their dad how to change a light bulb.

A searchable database would be nice but I'd like to see the DoL walk before they start running and possibly drop the ball completely. Hopefully they can get the registrations right then maybe look at maintaining an online database of contractors.

Just received notice form the ECB, notifying me that as of the 1 September 2012, the DOL will be doing the registrations...mmmm this could get interesting.

                        Hi Guys
I registered with the DoL in the Western Cape and I was really impressed with their service. It took 2 days to get everything done. It's funny how we say it's surprising when things are done like they are supposed to :-)

Would you mind sharing exactly what "needed to be done" and if there was a reason it took 2 days (didn't have a particuar supporting document on the first visit, perhaps?)

They still so busy fumbling trying to pick it up so there's hardly reason to fear them "dropping" it is there? :-D
