ESETA are now giving a one week training course on testing a single phase installation with the intent of issuing a COC.

Handymen, plumbers etc. can now after a week certify that they have worked in accordance with the regulations.

No wonder UNISA qualifications are not recognised overseas.

This has always been the case to my knowledge?

Option 1:

1. NQF level 3 - Ewseta
2. Documentary proof succesfull unit standard inspection - (any documentary proof as long as it is the prescribed by Ewseta)
3. Proof of 1 Year practical experience AFTER NQF 3 ("certificate" from "employer") OR NQF 4 (guess which is easier)
4. Pass that 1 week training course and assessed by ewseta.

What is scary is THAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN.

Late 90's and early 2000:

1. QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN
2. N3
3. Letter from employer that "you know stuff"

And then people wonder why the industry is in the state it is.

I have been looking for staff since January..... 540 CV's. Lots of N6 and trade tests and experience in this that and the other.

Not one person has even been able to handle cable correctly without taking a very long time to explain that tangled cable is hard to dress in...

And this bargaining council lot want us to pay a single phase tester nearly R90 an hour and they can't even handle cable no matter test an installation.

First question I ask - "how do measure earth fault loop impedance" - blank look everytime.....

I have given up getting qualified people.
1. You are supposed to pay them a ridiculous amount for pretty much no skills as they have bits of paper saying they are qualified - stuff that that
2. There really is not that much difference between a qualified person and a non qualified person (apart from the rate of pay you give them). I'd rather give an unqualified person with brains a good wage than waste it on "qualified" people who have none.

I cannot believe all these big electrical contracting companies pay the bargaining council rates.

Fed up with wasting a fortune to pay a so called qualified guys days wage to find he can do nothing.

You get all this "i know the wire, I know the tubing, I know the DB board wiring'

I know how to make a cake - doesn't make me a baker.

My new approach to my business is charge a lot more. I'm not good at anything else but my job - I'm good a electrician. Insult my mother - fine, insult my work - never.

I'm just keeping my business as me and my apprentice for a while.

This is why I work alone. Those are only the applicants who were not too lazy to apply. Have you handed one of them a drill which is in reverse and asked him to drill a hole? You will be surprised at how many blunt drill bits you suddenly own! I think I should start looking at getting out of the trade before I get electrocuted.
