What makes a ceiling fan unique ?

The regulations state that a ceiling fan, being a fixed appliance needs to have an isolator unless it is supplied through the earth leakage relay.

I read this to mean that if the ceiling fan is on earth leakage then it does not necessarily need an isolator.

Why not also a bathroom extractor fan, air conditioner or gate motor supplied with 230V ?

Trying to understand what the reasoning is behind this regulation. Why only a ceiling fan ?

Just a reminder - it's a ceiling fan incorporating a luminaire. A ceiling fan on its own does need an isolator...

My opinion...

bathroom fan has no exposed metal parts...generally fed from an isolator or 5 amp socket....yes i see it all the time connected directly to the bathroom light.

Aircon... generally fed from a 15 amp socket outlet or an isloator outside next to the outdoor unit... lets not go into these things ...25 -30 amp breakers used to prevent tripping on start up ...connector blocks taped up with extension cord to reach the plug in the room...etc etc.

gate motors...lets not even go there.

What i see on a daily basis ...i dont even know why we waste time with standards and regulation...i suppose they are for industrial applications...where there is a huge market for job creation for safety officers...i also work in the commercial and industrial environment ...and only places like RBM ...Alusaf ...Mondi etc really take safety seriously...it took me 5 days of induction courses to get through the gate at RBM ... common sense is something not practiced by many
