    [Question] geyser thermostat upgrade

As we move in to the smart era ... old stuff becomes less user friendly.

While doing the last smart upgrade ...one of the challenges I found was trying to connect the temp probe to the geyser ... the good old fashion slide in unit is a great "backup" but the geyser people will have to come up with a smart solution for customers to insert their smart probes ... I would feel a little more at ease if the old thermostat was still installed as a backup ... for safety reasons.

You could remove the old style probe and slide the new probe in its place ... or secure the probe to the outlet pipe and tape it.
Comments are based on opinion...not always facts....that's why people use an alias.

I still believe inthe old thermostat, billions have been made and they are adequate for the application.

Depending on the geyser type, you could use the earth stud to bolt the temperature sensor, however I have found that there is a temperature difference from this point to the water temperature. Adding some insulation, does reduce the temperature loss into the environment, and reduces the differential temperature difference. Connecting the sensor to the hot water output will work, but may read a little higher, and may be delayed with respect to the actual geyser temperature because of the location. Do clad the hot water pipe outlet to reduce heat loss, and to insure a better probe temperature reading.

The new geysers are now made with a retrofit thermostat which has push in terminals into the side of the geyser and directly connect the element, making an electronic retrofit a little more difficult to make. Not impossible, but may require some injection moulded tooling to be a drop in replacement, and where electronics could be connected for the Smart application.
