A tip for inspectors issuing COC's

The first and most important tip when issuing COC's ... at least get the document right ... make sure the correct pages are supplied ... make sure sure all the required blocks are filled out correctly ... make sure you use the right COC document.

Personally I dont see why the old 4 page cant still be used with an attachment to add anything missing ... just my opinion.

100 % of the investigation we have opened in the past 5 years have created red flags without even visiting the site ... you can tell by the manner in which the document is completed and the test results on the document ... the general figues are a dead giveaway ... the 0.2 ohms ... 230 V ... infinity for insulation resistance tests ... 25 mA.

For the jack frost and Jack sparrow in circulation ... the standard test results were used ... I wonder if they will ever surface for investigation.

Which brings me to the question ... is a COC a legal document and what makes it a legal document ?

If the answer is yes .... why is it being abused like it s just a worthless piece of paper.

Maybe we should use one of the many COC as an example on this public forum.

I should share the correspondence which will start today ... between the customer the estate agent, the inspector and myself.

I dont know what the legal implications would be ... but this one is a good example of red flags and I havent even visited the site yet.

The document is incomplete ... the correct blocks are not filled out ... the test results seem too good to be true ... the ka rating seems odd for a domestic installation (10 KA) ... the incorrect document has been issued ... the pool is regarded as a fixed appliance ... but I would bet my holy sockets there is no double pole isolator before the pool DB ... and I have a feeling there might be a few other items connected close to the pool.

The heading of this thread is confusing.

According to OHSA, inspectors are not allowed to work as contractors therefore they cannot issue coc's.

My personal opinion is that this is not a topic for discussion on a FORUM, nothing will change. If you know of any illegal COC report the registered person at DOL. They have representatives in every province that can deal with this. Get the register person out of the industry if he doesn`t want to comply. That`s the only way is to get rid of the lazy testers that as mentioned uses default values all the time. Report them and make a difference. If you need any contact details of where to report such COC`s you can send me a WA at 0824511009.

Or create a closed group for registered electricians to register and discuss issues with regards COC's and the many challenges we face on a daily basis?

Why I believe it is important to create a platform for registered electricians ... in some cases the person who did the COC is not even capable of filling out the document.

We need to create a platform were we we can discuss issue or queries we might have ... get a clear understanding of how to fill out the document etc ... as you can see the responses on this forum ... we all need a little help.

We should rather look at educating the registered electricians than trying to nail them ... I do realise there are the lazy ones who just want t climb on the train and get a free ride.

I also believe the pricing structure plays a huge roll ... we have bills to pay and if the market value is R650 to do a COC ... the only way to pay the bills is to take chances and the fact that their is no policing in the industry ... just makes it easy for us to roll them out.

Lets get the wording right ... what are people who do testing on a daily basis called if the not electrical inspectors ?

            Should it be ... " A tip for contractors issuing COC's" ?

I sure Dave wouldnt mind correcting the heading.

I like the idea of perhaps a more private group to discuss and help each other.

This forum is good but general public can also see.

For example a WhatsApp group could be good.

Can send pics or questions on jobs or where ever we not sure.

What I have learnt is what I was taught and thought to be only way has sometimes been wrong and many other ways to do it.

Sometimes we don't check on things as we were taught or always done it that way so must be correct.
