Client of mine wants to know if this is possible. My first reaction is no. Not sure how to prove it though.

At the end of the day energy input = energy output + losses
There will be resistance losses in the windings of both the motor and generator and heat ( caused through friction ) losses in the bearings of all 3 items
Ask the client if he expects the motor to get warm to the touch ? that will be the heat loss due to resistance
Unfortunately gravity will play its part.
A 1kw electric motor with not be able to drive a 1Kw generator and the flywheel will take energy away as well - It will maybe only produce 900watts which means with a bit of time it will become 800 watts as the system losses increase
They use the flywheel concept in " rotary UPS system " to prevent power dips - It is a rotary generator and used for big loads like stadiums so that the lights do not dip which will take to long to bring back on with the cool down and warm up time of the lamps
The rotary UPS is a electrical motor driving a generator with a flywheel in-between coupled to a diesel motor for power failures
There have been attempts to run them in a vacuum to minimize losses and bearing failures
I am under correction but I think all the stadiums used for the world cup soccer had to have rotary UPS installed -
