    Loadshed globes how do they work

    I recently bought a loadshed globe, out of curiosity
    The globe goes on when their is loadshedding if the switch is on! Otherwise you switch the globe on and it works!
    My question is: How do the globe knows the transformer is off? So that it can goes to battery mode

    Purely a guess here but is the globe running on "battery mode" continuously, similar to a Centurion Gate Motor? When the power is on it simply charges the battery?

      I would guess that they have a circuit, which when there is no power, measures the impedance of the supply.
      So when the switch is in the off position, the supply has an infinite impedance to the light.
      If the switch is in the on position, all the loads that are connected to the supply, will cause the impedance of the unpowered supply wires to be fairly low, so switch light on.
      There may be a threshold that the impedance measured to identify other loads on the same light circuit does not influence the measurement to power the light when the switch is in the off position.

              Just did a little experiment at someones house who has one of these globes.

              Switch the light switch off, the light turns off.
              Light switch on, the light turns on. Operates like normal lamp.

              Switch light switch off, light off.
              Switch off lights circuit breaker, light stays off.
              Switch off mains, light comes on.

              The only difference when turning off the mains is that you are disconnecting the neutral as well, so this lamp somehow detects the absence of a neutral.

              Exactly how it does this, I will leave for the electronic boffins to explain.

              Very interesting question.
