    V.I.R removal and re-wire

So satisfying to remove old brittle and crumbly VIR and replace with new in a 1940's apartment in Observatory, Johannesburg

That apartment looks like my fiance's in Ilovo. Same flooring and also same material looking wire. VIR I thought was rubber but also that material apparently. I am youngish and not often exposed to that cable.

Anyways cool post and glad you were able to rewire ! Also surprised you got it through the bosal.

On a house now that eoudk need a tractor to pull the cable out the bosal haha

Lol@Tractor! Only one was a bit tight luckily - difficult to grasp with pliers as it just disintegrates.

My mentor told me of a similar job on the South Coast where the conduit had rusted and fell away inside the slab. Owner had to put in a false ceiling after laying new PVC conduit surface mount.

I thought it was an elegant solution worth remembering!

Yep. False ceiling works well. Remember, if you are aware that a false ceiling is gonna be installed that there are no connections above it and that the neutral for the light be brought into the switch, much the same as you would do on a flat roof dwelling.

Yip here on the coast we have our challenges with old 16 mm split rusted steel conduit. What is even worse are the concealed TEE's and elbows.
