    Schuko

    Hello

Was at builders today as I forgot a socket for a job I had to do today.

Anyway I get the builders brand socket but with the Schuko pinout in it.

I then go to checkout and in screen says not allowed for sale.

Made me think as I can not find a shucko socket anywhere so now have they been denied sales and not allowed to be installed in SA anymore ?

If so then tell the appliance people to stop using them too hahaha.

The Schuko Socket is a SANS 164-6 type socket without the earth strap on the side - As far as I remember the earth strap on the side was the big safety issue as you could have the earth strap in your fingers while extracting , contact between earth on socket and plug top disconnecting while live pin still engaged. You could then become the earth path on a fault situation
It will be for double insulated appliances only , so no earth required - One with earth strap is banned

The extract below is from SANS 10142-1 ed 3 , so it is still recent and they should be able to sell it if it has a SANS164-2 in the configuration
They kept it in the regs for hotel clusters, guest houses etc for foreign guests

    6.15.1.1.6 A two-pole socket-outlet without earthing contact that has
dimensions complying with SANS 164-2 or SANS 164-6 shall only be installed
in a fixed installation when it is integrated with a socket-outlet complying with
SANS 164-1 or SANS 164-2 with earthing contact in a multiple socket-outlet.

Perhaps it was not Sans approved then. Will have a look when ever back there. Thank you !

Literally every single power tool in my workshop and in my site trailer has a schuko plugs. If the machine service department cuts off my 2 pin plug on the machines, they have replace the cable with the factory plug and cable.

People forget about class 1 and class 11 class 111 equipment.

A Class II or double insulated electrical appliance uses reinforced protective insulation in addition to basic insulation. Hence, it has been designed in such a way that it does not require a safety connection to electrical earth (ground).
