Essential and non essential circuits for backup systems.

I would like to hear your thoughts on splitting the DB into essential and non essential circuits.

Do you just connect everything to the backup system and tell the customer to switch off certain circuit during load shedding? I still see this a lot with generators. This and the suicide cord being used.

Or do you install a contactor which drops out when the power is off?

Or do you split the DB and make sure that when the unit is in islanding mode, only circuits connected to the essential part of the DB will work.

Unfortunately technology has come a long way, you can open your gate from the opposite side of the world, however i have only seen 2 suppliers who can offer an off the shelf DB with smart technology (that I know of). You could dabble with home assistant or get a software specialist to write a program for a plc and create an app, however the cost just wouldnt make it viable.

I split the db. Sometimes I even install another sub db for the essentials and fit the change over to the essential db, then there's no confusion.

We install an essential DB or if the D/Board has sufficient space which in domestic is unusual then a section allocated to essential .

We make sure that the load on essential is well below the inverter spec to avoid unnecessary potential tripping

Or to prevent damage to the inverter.

I hear this is a common problem with warranty claims, damaged contactors due to over current.
