Another topic that very few understand and apply correctly.
What is a UPS?
A UPS, or Uninterruptible Power Supply, is a device that provides immediate battery backup power to connected equipment during a power failure or disturbance, protecting against data loss and hardware damage. It also acts as a filter, safeguarding sensitive electronics from power quality issues like surges, sags, and other fluctuations.
The cable that comes with the packaging is included for a reason, not to throw in the bottom drawer.
You cannot connect a UPS with a millisecond changeoverer to a life support sytem, a securtity system, data centres etc, well you can and some fools do, because they dont have clue what they are doing.
Firstly lets start with the UPS, not all UPS sytems are equal.
1/ online or switching.
2/ modified sinewave and pure sine wave.
We all see it in the electrical industry, electricains who barely passed the trade test and have no interest in the industry, just dollar signs, if that is the case you made a bad choice, the electrical industry will most likely hit the bottom first, other trades make way more money than electricians, 3 times more monney.
The sad thing is that generally, electricians dont even know the difference between a PZ and a PH screwdrivers, how could you expect them to know the difference between a 3 ka and a 6 ka circuit breaker, or a C curve and D curve breaker, I digress, back to the UPS.
By the way the cable included in the package, is to link the UPS to the device it is backing up, which is used to communicate with the device allowing it time to shutdown and save open programs automatically, yes automatically, so if you have gone for a pee or a quickie with a co worker, the UPS, if correctly selected, will close the programs and shut down the computer without loosing any information.
If the equipment cannot handle the modified sine wave, you are going to have issues.
The real challenge, online UPS devices are exactly that, and online device, they dont switch, and suddenly all your equipment is rebooting.
There is a reason an online UPS is way more expensive than a switching UPS, they offer a stable power supply with no delay switching.
To give you an expample: I had a company contact me because they were experiencing data loss issues, a company had charged them a bundle of cash to fit a switching UPS at each computer, however they still had data losses during the day. they even tried linking to a data centre, they still had issues. I installed an online pure sine wave UPS (over 20 years ago) other than a couple of batteries replacements, the sytem is still operating to this day and yes it did resolve the issues.
An inverter is not an online UPS, in fact far from it, and the supplier should notifiy you that they cannot be used for life support systems, no matter how fast they switch.
You need to understand an inverter supplies grid power until it switch, not a stable pure sine wave. The stable clean pure sine wave power will only kick in whenthe grid power fails.
By the way, I could copy and paste these posts into Ai and correct everything, the reason I dont is because it lets you know, they are created by a human who has many years experience in this inudstry.
