    Labour rates and fees

    Understanding labour rates,

Labour rates are scaled on the type of work you do and the location.

Because my customer base ranges from the domesatic kitchen revamps to large scale industry, my rates vary, a lot.

When I work in the domestic market, currently 99% of my work, it is a brain dead easy market to work in, you can get up in the morning and dont even need to put your thinking cap on, dress however you feel comfortable, work flexible hours, with limited human interaction skills, you should be ok.

However as you move up the scale, stricter regulations apply, including dress code, safety induction, safety files, medicals, public liablity insurance and all that stuff, which results in a substantial hourly rate increase.

Just the clothing reuirements adjustment is huge, we taking hard hats, hi vis vents, falme retardent overals, safety boots.

Then we have all the paperwork and insurances and risks.

Medcials and safety files and more paperwork.

Then we have safety induction, the last project I did for large industry, it took 5 days to complete all the safety induction courses, just to get on ot the site.

Then we have the discomfort factor, trust me, I have worked in places like Richards bay in the middle of summer, wearing the full safety kit, sweating like a fool, which is a dangers all on its own, but nobody seems to take that into consideration when applying the rules. We wont even go into live switching protective gear, industry can be lucky I am not a safety officer, things would certainly improve.

When you hear someone pointing out ho cheap the bakkie brigade is compared to the large scale industrial elctricians, you need to understand the reuirements for each applications, by the time your first safety induction file is prepared and ready for delivery, it will be at that point you realized you messed up, and why you cant charge less than R1000- R2000 per hour.

We haven't even started with height restriction, ladders and scaffolding , permits and all that other nice stuff that until you have the many many many years of experience in the industry, might never get to experience.
