    intrinsic relays

    heres one for the master sparkies;
    i want to convert a machine for a zoned area.its a few motors that can be changed to exd motors and some limit/level switches.my question is: can i install an intrinsic relay in the safe area to monitor the switch,without changing the switch to an ex rated switch.
    if it must be replaced then i wouldnt need the intrinsic relay in the first place.

    you can use an intrisically safe relay but the relay cannot be in the zoned area...if it is located in the zoned area must be enclosed in a suitable enclosure.

    i did a job in cape town where our controls panel was mounted in a zoned area...so we had to install a panel which weighed about 400 kg and had a about 30 screws to hold the front cover.

      hi murdock the relay will be in the safe area,but i see there are some other dis.boards in zone 2, but protected by purging and others with lel sensors.
      i am leaving the selection of the level switches to the consultants. they can sort out the zoning and loop diagrams,etc
