so which tester do you carry with you when working on site?

mine use to be the fluke 87 but i have since retired it for a fluke 76.

i am considering getting one of these combo tong tester multi meter units

I have had my majortech combo tong tester for 6 yrs now and never had problems,and btw it dropped a couple months back from 7 stories and still fine ,and there prices are the best for the qaulity u get.,.,.,.,.

i tried a major tech multimeter...but after being spoilt with the fluke multimeters and their long test leads i ended up dumping the major tech one...those short plastic test leads they ome with drove me nuts....maybe i should have rather just spent the money and swopped the leads for the fluke ones...it would have saved me the R5800 i spent getting the fluke 289 instead...and by the way that is a multimeter of note...i have the 189 but having to use the big battery pack for recording and not being able to view the trend on the screen straight away is a huge advantage and time saving feature on the 289

I carry a few testers in the vehicle, a Kyoritsu analogue clamp-on ammeter (I think it's a 2600) it gives current, voltage and temperature readings and it's about 20 years old. It's never needed repairs and it's never failed a periodic calibration. Also a Riken hand cranked insulation tester and a Ideal LAN tester with port mapper.

MEGGER Multifunctional tester. Cant go wrong.

Or KEWTECH. Got both and love them both.

i have read lots of reports about the megger multifunction installtion tester...i have considered replacing my 1653 with the megger instead of the 1653b ...but i noted that there is a problem with the leads according to uk websites i have read...but will consider buying the equipment directly from the uk...at a fraction of the price you pay in sa...lucky i have family there and they are in the electricial field.

Has anyone of you guys seen or held one of the old vacuum tube multi meters ? I got 4 hand-me-down meters from an old guy that is now 92 years old and amongst others an old Megger and this vacuum tube job.
I shall take some pics and post these. Makes one very nostalgic looking at these old things.
Pity he did not think of removing the old batteries ! One meter still had one of the very first leak proof Eveready batteries and did not leak ..

When you say vacuum tube, is this a valve tester?

No Andy, you have to plug the meter into the mains and wait for it to warm up, then zero the needle and only then can you use the multi meter. Approx 200 mm x 150 mm x 100 mm thick.
