Gas installation regulations.

Hi All

Hoping that someone can be of assistance.

I have been requested to install 7 gas geysers for a client who insists that I do the job.
It must be done in such a way that an independent gas installer will find no fault with the installation.
I have been through all the regulations, seen many installations and it doesn't seem like rocket science to get it right.

The regulations concentrate on all the necessary measurements etc. regarding the gas bottles. Where they may or may not be.

One thing lacking are specifications of where the geyser itself may or may not be mounted.
The only mention of the location of the geyser itself I can find is that it must be at least 1400mm above floor level.

2 questions I have. 1. How far away from a window or door can the geyser be mounted if outside ?
2. Can the geyser be mounted on a dry wall if inside ?

I would be careful installing gas geysers as an electrical contractor - If you do not have the qualifications to install gas stay away as your insurance will not not cover you in the case of a liability claim or contractors all risk policy. The client will deny ever insisting when the problem occurs

The same way we as electrical contractors complain about unregistered people carrying out electrical work - SAME SAME with gas installers

Had a site meeting with a registered gas installer today.

I will be hanging the geysers and doing the necessary plumbing.

He is going to do the gas lines, regulators etc. and once all is done and tested, supply the necessary COC's.

Client happy, me happy, gas man happy.

Anyone have the gas regulations with regards to plug points close to a gas geyser mounted indoors?

All I find is section 9 from gas code SANS10087-1 2013 ed6


9 Electrical equipment and other sources of ignition
Where electrical equipment is placed within the safety distance as specified in figures 3, 4 and 6
such equipment shall be in accordance with the requirements of SANS 10108.
Electrical equipment, such as light switches and plugs, shall be at least 200 mm away from any
burner and potential point of gas release. Where it is necessary to install a gas hob together with an
electric oven, a three-point plug socket shall not be used to connect the electric oven. A proper
isolator switch shall be in place above the level of the hob and it shall have at least 200 mm
clearance from the hob.
No electrical connection shall be made below the hob. See figures 3 and 4 for further connections.
